The ‘Royal Walking Tour’ around the City of Westminster was thoroughly enjoyable - though we were the only members of the tour with a sense of humour. We learnt all about the drunk Irishman who found himself in Buckingham Palace and stumbled upon the Queen’s bedroom, waking her, and no doubt giving her quite a fright. He wasn’t there to harm her though - just looking for a light of his cigarette! Or the German backpackers who camped out in the Queen’s private garden for the night, thinking they were in Hyde Park. Even a story about Wellington body, after his death, being preserved in a barrel of rum. Well, until the rest of the rum ran out and the sailors got thirsty, which is where the phrase, “tapping the admiral” comes from! Afterwards we treated ourselves to a traditional English Pub meal.
